Sarah Singleton (2) / G.W.Thomas

Well I have now been able to make contact with Sarah, so to replace the earlier 'des says' version:

SARAH SINGLETON
Showcase (Nemo 2)

... well, since appearing in Nemo, I've been a very lucky girl. My writing career has taken an unexpected turn, since turning a short story for adults, on a whim, into a gothic novel for young people. This was 'Century', which was taken on by agent Rosemary Canter and subsequently by Simon and Schuster. It was published in March 05 with a glorious cover by photographer Simon Marsden, and went on to win the Booktrust Teen Award. My second book for Simon and Schuster, 'Heretic', a gothic historical fantasy, was published this year and received a very complimentary review in the Times. I am working on book number 3 for S&S, which is called 'Sacrifice' and should be out in the spring, and have a contract to write one more novel. 'Century' has also been released in an educational edition, so 13 year olds are having to write essays about it - poor things! Suffice to say, after long years of writing and submitting, I am feeling very happy and lucky. Though I haven't yet been able to give up the day job. :-)

The Secret (Nemo 2)

How I am getting on:
My story was "The Secret" from Nemo #2. This was a Rainbow Man story, in fact the crowning title out of 40+ such stories. Most of the Rainbow Man tales were published by Megan Powell at FABLES. Most are more fantasy-oriented though still observations on life. "The Secret" was a summation of many ideas and quite frankly a hard sell. No action, no monster, etc.

What I got out of it:
Since that issue I have started my own small publishing outfit, RAGE m a c h i n e Books. One of the first books I did is a collection of fantasy tales called DRAGONTONGUE & OTHER STORIES featuring all the Rainbow Man stories. "The Secret" is not my favorite Rainbow Man story but I do think it may be the best of the lot. These things are highly subjective of course. What publishing it in as classy a spot as Nemo#2 did do was signal to me that the series had finally achieved what I had set out to do with it. To write any more stories would simply be padding. The fact that the story would appear without my name and no real connection to the others in the series gave me a chance to judge its value entirely on its own. Thanks for the opportunity, Des!
