MIKE O'DRISCOLL
'Double Zero for Emptiness' , nemonymous 1

What difference did nemo make?
Who can say? I didn't write this specifically for nemo. I seem to remember a lot of people speculating about who might have/might yet submit stories, and the thought of getting a tale about a famous writer published anonymously in nemo seemed appropriate. The story was sparked by watching a documentary about King, during the months of recovery after his accident. A lot of stuff in there, the obsessive fan with the bomb, the drinking, the belief in the sixties, Charlie Starkweather's empty eyes looking like the double zero on a roulette wheel, was all straight from the horse's mouth. I threw in a few references to lost dog posters and olive skinned men because they featured heavily in the story 'Low Men in Yellow Coats', the first story in the collection 'Hearts in Atlantis', which I happened to be reading at the time. Nothing much happens in the story, except a guy thinks about where he is now and how he got there and where he might go next. The story is about uncertainty, which is what I mostly feel every time I start out to write something new.
I wrote a review of nemo 1 for 'The Alien Online' and regret not taking the opportunity to give myself a right pasting. I didn't have the guts that Sam Delany had in writing critical essays on his own novels under the pseudonym K. Leslie Steiner.

How am I getting On?
I had a few stories published prior to to my appearance in nemo, and have had a few more appear since then. One tale, 'Silence of the Falling Stars' was reprinted in both "Best New Horror 15" and "Year's Best Fantasy and Horror 17". Gary Fry published 'The Hurting House' in "Poe's Progeny" after publishing another story of mine anonymously in "Fusing Horizons". The story is about a writer whose pseudonymous tales are stolen from him. Ironically, Des rejected it for nemo 3 after I submitted it anonymously. My first collection of stories, 'Unbecoming', will be published by Elastic Press on August 1 - order your copy now and make me, if not rich, then less impoverished. The collection contains 1 new story, and it also contains 'Sounds Like', which had a checkered history before appearing in 'Gathering the Bones', but is currently being filmed by Brad Anderson as a 1 hour tele-movie for Showtime's 'Master's of Horror' series. Should be broadcast in the states in the Autumn, in the UK early next year on Bravo.

I'm currently working on nothing at all.
